How to turn a photo of your signature into a clean image
Updated 17 October 2026
Already have a signature you’re happy with? Sign on paper, take a photo, and the Upload tab removes the paper and shadows, leaving only the ink on a transparent background. You keep your real signature, the one that matches your ID and past documents.
Your photo is processed on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server.
Before you take the photo
- Use plain white paper. Lined or squared paper leaves its lines in the result.
- Sign with a dark pen, black or blue. Pencil and light colors are too faint.
- Use even light, such as daylight near a window. Make sure your hand or phone doesn’t cast a shadow over the page.
- Get close. Let the signature fill most of the photo.
Turn the photo into a clean signature
- Open the signature generator and tap the Upload tab.
- On a phone, tap Take photo. A camera opens inside the page; the first time, your browser asks to allow camera access. Frame the signature and press the round button. Or tap Choose image to pick a photo you’ve already taken. On a computer, use Choose image.
- The background is removed automatically and the result appears in the preview.
- Adjust Cleanup strength if needed: slide it up if specks, paper texture or shadows remain, and down if thin parts of the signature fade away.
- Photo sideways? Tap Rotate 90°.
- Pick an Ink color to recolor the signature, then tap Download PNG.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Chrome says “Unable to complete previous operation due to low memory”
This message comes from Chrome on Android, not from this site. It appears when the browser hands over to your phone’s camera app and Android closes the browser to free memory, losing the photo. The page reopens on the Upload tab with a note. Close other apps and try again, or take the photo with your camera app first, then use Choose image.
“Camera access is blocked for this site”
You (or your browser) declined camera access. In Chrome, tap the icon to the left of the web address, open Permissions, and allow Camera. Or tap Take photo again to use your camera app, or Choose image.
“This format isn’t supported. Please use JPG or PNG.”
The photo is in a format your browser can’t open, usually HEIC, the format iPhones use. This mostly happens with iPhone photos moved to a computer or an Android phone. Take the photo with Take photo instead, take a screenshot of it, or set your iPhone to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
Grey patches or shadows remain
The lighting was uneven. Raise Cleanup strength, or retake the photo in even light without a shadow over the page.
Parts of the signature are missing or broken
Cleanup is too strong for a light pen. Lower Cleanup strength, or sign again with a darker pen.
Lines from the paper show up
The paper was lined or squared. Sign on plain white paper and take a new photo.
The Android photo picker is confusing
That screen belongs to your phone, not this site. Tap a photo so it gets a blue tick, then tap Done. The magnifier button only makes the thumbnails bigger. To leave without picking, press your phone’s back button; the on-screen back arrow first clears your selection.
